About This Text

This text was prepared by Lisa Ripperton, using as copytext, A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys,, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, with 60 designs by Walter Crane, Boston: Houghton-Mifflin & Company, 1893.

Since this book was first published before 1923, it is in the public domain in the United States. By U.S. law, it entered the public domain 75 years after its first publication.

Exquisite art work by Walter Crane is included in the text. This include full-page illustrations as well as headpieces and tailpieces. In many cases the headpieces were separated into a title piece and an initial letter piece to suit the needs of web typography.
